In addition to Fenske's impressive performance, the immediate result of note at Faribault is the quality and depth of the Edina girls. As speculated last week, Edina came into the season with the potential to thoroughly dominate the state meet in nearly unprecedented fashion. This week, they validated that speculation. Consider:
*The Edina girls posted a team CCRS of 116.62 at Faribault. The state's second ranked team, Willmar, posted a score of 112.1 at Bauman/Rovn. Granted, Willmar appears to be without their potential #4 and #5 runners, but even assuming their presence (and a similar gap behind the top three) only elevates their CCRS into the 113.high-114 range. This comfortably separates Willmar from Minnetonka, Marshall, and EP, but still leaves a 2.5+ point gap to Edina.
*Perhaps as few as 9 runners in the state have produced performances better than the one turned in by Sadie Schriner, Edina's #5 runner, at Faribault - The six listed above, plus Sophie Whicher, Emily Covert, and Jaycie Thomsen.
On the subject of individuals, Sophie Whicher may well have produced the best race of the season by a significant margin. Her result at the NXN Heartland Preview suggests a score of over 120.5. However, that comes with the small caveat that Willmar's second race in three days may have slightly depressed their performance and inflated Whicher's score as a result. Regardless, she appears to be the state favorite right now.
